500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note Abstract

The third edition of 'Connections in the History and Systems of Psychology' covers psychology's philosophical and physiological antecedents. The philosophical coverage emphasizes the main currents of thought during the Golden Age of philosophers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. It also explores the development of philosophy and science through the Roman period, Middle and the Renaissance. Descartes as a major transitional figure leading toward the modern era is also highlighted. The book further examines the major philosophical antecedents to the beginning of psychology as a separate discipline, particularly emphasizing the British empiricists and associationists, the French empiricists, and the continental rationalists. It also surveys the effects on psychology from physiology through the 19th century. The work of Wundt is examined, as well as the antecedents and founding of functionalism. Also highlighted is the study of animal behavior. Gestalt psychology and psychoanalysis are surveyed. Lastly, the book focuses on the cognitive revolution.
