It searches the sources of these theories and further explains how to distinguish normal from abnornal development of a child. The book further explains developmental causes and cures of neuroses, principles of learning and social contexts, and judges the appropriateness of research methods. It further explores the way children gain skill in processing information and for how a child's innermost self develops. In addition, patterns of environmental influence and biological sources of development, and lastly ways children's and youths' moral reasoning and moral behavior is explained.
