Abstract
This book was written to provide simple sociological analysis of the practice of education in Nigeria. It is designed to meet the needs of students of education taking the student from the concepts of sociology, social stratification and society to that of education, examined first as a discipline and secondly as a social institution. The traditional family functions which involve child bearing and socialization start the next level of analysis, taking the student through the roles of the peer group and the members of the community in education, on to the concrete analysis of the socialization process. Culture is then analyzed as the substance of the content of education. Next the controversy between heredity and environment is examined. From there, some of the contemporary issues concerning the family and education, the school as a social organization, deviant behavior in schools, and the functions of teaching as a social action are analyzed. Finally, teaching as a profession and social changes and education are examined and discussed in some detail.
