Abstract

This book will provide university students and trainee teachers with an introduction to the social bases of education. It amalgamates a thorough appreciation of sociological theories, concepts and methods with many examples from sub Saharan Africa. The book first deals with the organization of education in different societies and then with the social function of education, formal and informal processes of education, and in particular with agents of socialization. The school and the classroom are dealt with in detail as is the role of the teacher in society. Finally, the book deals with the various social factors which contribute to educational inequality in Africa.
